Over Hours Request
This is the process for students who want to take between 18.5-21 credits during the fall or winter semesters, or 9.5-11 credits during the spring and summer terms.
Things to Consider:
- It is strongly recommended for students to have a graduation plan with all of their graduation requirements mapped out until they graduate. This will allow students to determine how helpful taking additional credits will be to their overall plan.
- A student should be in good academic standing to be considered.
- Some departments/schools require students to have completed a certain number of semesters within the major.
- Advisors can approve up to 21 hours in Fall/Winter and 11 in Spring/Summer.
- Students approved for Over-Hour requests are not able to add the extra classes to their schedule until the first day of classes.
- If a student wishes to request over 21 hours, they must first be approved for 21 hours by their advisor. After the first day of classes, they may go through a petition process through the University Registrar’s Office https://registrar.byu.edu/petitions to add additional credit hours.
Process to add over hours:
- Fill out and submit the over hours approval form to your advisor. Your advisor will then contact you to let you know if your request has been approved, denied, or if more information is needed to make a decision.
