Theatre and Media Arts

THEATRE AND MEDIA ARTS OVERVIEW

BYU’s theatre programs—Acting, Music Dance Theatre (MDT), Theatre Arts Studies, and Theatre Arts Education—invite students to explore the possibilities theatre provides for collaboration, citizenship, service, and building faith. Our BA programs in Theatre Arts Studies and Theatre Education emphasize the balance between practical theatre training and critical thinking. We provide equally robust training in theatre design and technology, and play development. Our limited enrollment BFA acting training programs in Acting and MDT prepare students for performance careers on stage and screen. All our programs provide extensive opportunities for production in classroom settings, workshops, and fully-mounted productions both at BYU and at external venues.

The Media Arts Studies program is a limited enrollment program that provides a strong liberal arts foundation and specialized technical training. Students gain versatile skills in narrative and documentary film making, supported by studies in film culture, history, and critical analysis. The program emphasizes professional practices, creative problem-solving, collaboration, and building faith. The program provides multiple opportunities to create a wide range of media arts from fiction to documentary films, new media projects, digital content, and more.

Students from our TMA programs are prepared for careers in the fields of theatre and performance, are ready for graduate studies, and have a wide range of transferrable skills that will set them on a path for success no matter what their future holds.
